REPORTAGE: impa - the cultural factory in buenos aires
Struggle, Work and Education.
IMPA is a historical aluminium factory in Buenos Aires, recovered, that is occupied, by the workers in 1998. Years of struggle to restore the economic balance and resistance against numerous attempts by the police to throw them out, has finally lead to the legal allocation of the production management to the factory workers today united in a cooperative.
Despite the huge economical challange, the workers of IMPA have managed to create a cultural centre of great importance for the neighbourhood, Almagro, including free high school and health center and a variety of daily cultural activities like theater, music, dance and writing workshops.
So far more than 150 young and old have graduated from the IMPA folk school and in june 2010 the "University of the Workers" was inaugurated, another step towards education for everyone.
