LONG TERM PROJECTS: DamAge: DamAge - thailand

Pak Mun Dam

The building of the Pak Mun Dam in Thailand has lead to strong opposition by the local population as the number of fish and fish species in the river is dramatically reduced because of the dam. To avoid blocking the fish migration in the river completely a fishladder was proposed by the World Banks fishing experts, but this has proved useless.

Known as "The Mother of Waters", more than 60 million people depend on the Mekong river and its tributaries for food, fresh water, transport and other aspects of daily life. The construction of big dams is now threatening the life of these people aswell as the vital and unique ecosystem of the river.

  • Pito, one of the activists from the 'Assembly of the poor', watching the closing of the gates upriver from the dam.
  • The fish ladder promoted by the World Bank has proved useless and has been renamed 'the fish thrower' by the locals, as the only way to make the fish go up is to throw it up.
  • A dead fish on the river shore.
  • Local fishermen waiting to go fishing in their boats on the day of the closing of the gates. For the next couple of days the area upriver from the dam gets filled with fish because the dam blocks their migration downstream to the Mekong.

  • View from the Pak Mun dam. The soil on the riverside (flooded everytime the damgates are closed) shows visible signs of erosion.

  • Erosion near the river Mun.
  • Mr. Kan Wangphon (73). For the loss of his house, situated on the present dam site, he got a new house a few kilometres away from the river that was never constructed completely. The distance from the river makes it impossible to cultivate rice and vegetables and to continue fishing.
  • The 'compesation house' of Mr. Kan Wangphon. For the loss of his house, situated on the present dam site, he got a new house a few kilometers away from the river that was never completed.
  • Mrs. Sompong Viengjan (53). As one of the main protesters against the Pak Mun dam she has been arrested many times for her engagement. She is still one of the spokeswomen for the local population with the government.
  • One nights catch in the Mun river. The number of fish species, and the size of the fish, has been dramatically reduced after the construction of the dam. Before the dam local fishermen could earn good money from fishing, today there is not even enough fish in the river to feed their families.

  • Mr. Tongjarearn Sihataam (65). As one of the main protesters against the Pak Mun dam he has been arrested many times for his engagement.
  • One of many women who have converted to hand-crafts to earn money for the family because they cannot go fishing anymore in the river.
  • Mr. Sifong Nadee (65) used to be a fisherman, but with the lack of fish in the river he is now trying to make a living transporting people on the river with his boat to face the economical needs of his family.
  • A tree in the Mekong River.
  • Kampang Wangpon (24), a young dj at the radiostation created by the Assembly of the Poor to transmit information regarding the dam to the villagers. He is one of the few young villagers who have decided to remain and continue his parents battle against the dam instead of emigrating to the city.
